What to Do When I Don’t Understand an RC

Asked by Abc45 on 2026-09-23 in CAT Prep

Okay so basically when I understand the RC my accuracy is around 90-95 percent If I get the overall idea of the RC my accuracy is around 75 percent But sometimes I did not understand the passage at all I might understand one or two paragraphs but then my accuracy drastically decreases

So how can I improve when I did not understand anything about the RC And should I practice more difficult RCs to improve my understanding and broaden my perspective

Reading more helps but if you aren't understanding an RC that usually suggests a block in comprehending certain words or sentences. Take a picture of the RCs that you are finding difficult to understand and ask chapgpt to simplify the content. Then go back and read the passage along with the simplified explanation till you understand how those specific sentences/phrases are conveying the idea. This is the important part. When you do this exercise, make sure that the passage, as it is written, is now clear to you. Make this a practice and over time you'll find it more easier to recognize the writing styles seen in these RCs.

Read more , practice more.
Read slow , don't rush through the passage
Also you need not understand every word of the RC. You need to know what the author is saying as a whole and then see which are the 2 easy questions that you can solve correctly

practice reading and increase its time if you already are reading and try to understand authors point of view while doing so

your accuracy when you get the RC is already great, so the fix is just handling tough passages better.

when you dont get it, dont panic. read para by para and note the main idea of each in 3-4 words next to it. this alone lifts accuracy a lot
for questions, always go back to the passage, never answer from memory on tough RCs
skip inference questions first, do direct/detail ones, then come back
yes, practice harder RCs. do philosophy, abstract art, science-heavy ones from CAT PYQs (2015-2019 are the toughest). aim for 2 RCs daily, 1 easy 1 hard

you're already at 90%+ on easier ones, tough RCs will come with exposure. keep going!
