Need suggestions with VARC

Asked by Shreyan Roy on 2026-07-25 in CAT Prep

Everyone, especially those who are good with VARC, I am facing a problem which feels like an existential crisis now. I need suggestions, whatever you can provide. Earlier, my reading stamina was bad, so I could not focus on RCs. Now my reading focus has increased, and I am able to read through RCs during mocks and practice sessions. But the main issue is the question having 2 very similar options. I am able to understand the passage and eliminate 2 wrong choices, but whenever I see 2 very similar options, I get confused and most of the time mark the wrong one. Can anybody suggest how to fix this problem? I am sure many of you are facing the same issue like me

I'm not sure what's the best approach to eliminate between two similar options but I'll just point out my own elimination pointers which I keep in mind.
1-distortion(facts, main idea, tone)
2-addition or deletion of ideas
3-conciseness (gut feeling - tie breaker in the end)
DON'T S:-
°don't pick answer which lead to further discussion
°avoid repetition
°narrow statements
°tampering statements
°too vague
°Grammatical errors
°Don't pick answer which is correct as per passage BUT NOT presenting Main ideas.
Hope this helps!! 🌷

What works for me every time is that whenever I get stuck with 2 very similar options, I try to look for few things like if that option is too extreme, too narrow, if it's talking about something new which is not mentioned in passage or if something's missing. Most of the time this works. We get confused if we keep on re-reading the options or passage. Avoid doing that.
And one tip - after you analyze your marked option later, try to check why was it wrong, what was your thought process while marking it. It will help you a lot to avoid the traps. Hope this helps.
