How Should I Use My Gap Year After Graduation to Prepare for CAT 2026?

Asked by Anonymous on 2026-03-23 in CAT Prep

I graduated in June 2025 with strong academics. I attempted CAT 2025 with minimal preparation and didn’t score well. I now plan to attempt CAT 2026 seriously, but I’m unsure how to best utilize this gap year. Given that securing a full-time job is difficult right now, should I focus on internships and upskilling through relevant courses, or continue trying for a job for better profile value? I also want to ensure I have a solid backup plan in case CAT 2026 doesn’t go as planned.

If your acads are strong you need not worry about gap. What matters for admissions the most is acad performance which yours is sorted. Only repare well for CAT and maybe do courses and all.

There are a bunch of things you can do to improve your profile and justify the gap (although this little a gap won't be a big deal and the interviewers only care about why you're taking the gap):

- Certifications/Courses (Coursera, Udemy)
- Case Competitions (Unstop)
- Live Projects
- Virtual Simulations (Forage)
- Internships (LinkedIn/Internshala)
- Volunteer in NGOs (iVolunteer)
- Freelancing (Fiverr, Upwork)
- Knowledge (Watch YT videos, stay active on Twitter)
- Portfolio (Build your own website)
- AI Projects (use websites like Lovable)

You can pick a mix of these. If you need a solid backup, you can either look for a job, freelance/start your own business or side gig or take other exams like XAT NMAT CMAT or even banking and govt exams if interested.
