How to Start CAT Preparation from Scratch (Non-Engineers & Beginners Welcome!)
Asked by Vikram Singh on 2026-04-04 in CAT Prep
Hi everyone,
I’m starting this thread for anyone preparing for CAT (especially beginners and non-engineers) who might feel overwhelmed or unsure where to begin.
I’ve noticed that most coaching strategies jump directly into shortcuts and advanced problems, which can be confusing if your basics aren’t strong. So here’s a practical approach that I’ve researched and started following:
🔹 1. Build Strong Basics First
If you haven’t studied maths after class 10, don’t rush into mock tests.
Focus on:
Arithmetic (Percentages, Profit & Loss, Time & Work) Algebra basics Number System fundamentals
Start slow, focus on concepts Practice 20–30 questions daily Don’t chase speed initially
📗 Logical Reasoning & Data Interpretation (LRDI)
Practice sets daily (very important) Learn pattern recognition Start with easy sets → gradually increase difficulty
📕 Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension (VARC)
Read daily (The Hindu, Aeon, etc.) Practice RCs regularly Focus on understanding, not memorization 🔹 3. Mock Tests Strategy Start mocks after 1–2 months of preparation Begin with 1 mock per week → then increase to 2–3 Analyze every mock deeply (this is where improvement happens) 🔹 4. Daily Study Plan (Example) QA: 2 hours LRDI: 1.5 hours VARC: 1–1.5 hours Revision: 30 mins
Consistency > Motivation
🔹 5. Biggest Mistakes to Avoid ❌ Ignoring basics ❌ Giving too many mocks without analysis ❌ Comparing yourself with others ❌ Switching strategies too often 🔹 6. For Working Professionals Focus on quality over quantity Study 2–3 hours daily + longer sessions on weekends Stick to a fixed schedule 🔹 Final Advice
CAT is not about being a topper—it’s about being smarter than the competition on exam day.
Even with average starting level, a disciplined 6–8 month preparation can give you a strong percentile.
Would love to hear from others:
