My VARC scores are tanking so hard .

Asked by Anonymous on 2026-07-28 in CAT Prep

I think I have a decent understanding of the passage but my inference vs the authors take seems to miss more frequently than not. How do i avoid this?
I'm sticking to the idea withing the passage , not bringing external factors to play but still i dont seem to be understanding or doing well to eliminate.
If anybody has some insights, please do share thanks!

Honestly, elimination methods doesn't work for me either.
Whenever I try to eliminate an option with my reasoning I've failed miserably, let alone matching my reason with the author; for me finding the option that most closely answers the question always works rather than reasoning out the other options.
At the same time, it depends on how much you can deduce the meaning of the passage word by word. Sometimes a sentence could mean something complety opposite to what we might infer which is where vocab comes into play.

Try identifying the two closest answer choices first, then eliminate the weaker one. Most importantly - Read with intent.
After every sentence, ask yourself: Why? What? How? Staying curious helps you connect each idea to the next, making the passage much easier to follow. You will reach the end in no time with over 80% comprehension.

After solving, try putting the RCs in ChatGPT and ask it to explain the RC to you - understand where your logic is going wrong. Once you start doing this, you might understand the pattern of your mistakes.

Start by reading editorials from any newspaper ( TOI , HT any ) or a 1000 word aeon essay
Write in very short pointers what inference do you get from the essay / editorial ( not more than 50 words )
Then , ask chatgpt to do the same exercise , read and check where do you actually match , where do you not.
This is will actually let you know where you are actually right or wrong , also it will help in actual comprehension+ passage analysis. Ask Chatgpt how is your short summary right or wrong.
