Average is a misused term, tbh. Think about it is this way - as a person you're not just one quality/trait. There's a mix of intellect, discipline, creativity, empathy, etc. A person can be anywhere on a spectrum for each of these traits. So, "average" on one spectrum maybe but on all - less likely.
Now to answer your question - based on my observation, IIM students have this specific quality of harnessing their true strengths/traits where they are above average on the spectrum.
E.g. A batchmate of mine from an IIT was high intellect but average at communication, so he entered a non-client facing role that required critical thinking.
On the other hand, I am more on the creative, empathy side and not so disciplined - hence not doing a corporate job and instead pursuing a creative field.
Another batchmate was extremely disciplined (like you're saying you're hard working). He was good wrt intellect, not exceptional. So he entered a role with intense working hours, go-getter attitude.
Hope you're getting the point? IIM students are good at identifying their strengths, positioning themselves accordingly and playing on them. Having said that, I wouldn't wanna generalize so this is just my take for most cases.
