Chances of old IIMs for GEM with 89/81/7.2 and no work experience?
Asked by Anonymous on 2026-04-15 in Profile Review
I’m a General Engineer Male (GEM) preparing for CAT and wanted an honest evaluation of my chances for old IIMs.
My academic profile:
10th: 89% 12th: 81% Graduation: 7.2 CGPA Work Experience: 0 years
I understand that being a GEM puts me in a highly competitive category, and my academics are decent but not exceptional.
I wanted to know:
What CAT percentile should I realistically target for calls from IIM A, B, C, L, K, and I? Are IIM A and B practically out of reach with my profile? Which top B-schools should I focus on apart from old IIMs? Would gaining 1–2 years of work experience significantly improve my chances?
Looking for honest and practical advice from people who have gone through this process.
Thanks in advance!
