Yes, you should continue preparing for CAT.
In fact, students from families with incomes below ₹2.5 lakh are among the people who benefit the most from top B-schools because the return on investment can be life-changing.
A few things you should know:
1. Don't assume that MBA fees have to be paid upfront from your family's pocket.
Most students at top B-schools use education loans. Banks regularly provide loans for institutes like IIMs, FMS, SPJIMR, XLRI, IIFT, MDI, etc. Repayment usually starts after the course and moratorium period.
2. Many top B-schools offer need-based financial assistance.
Students from lower-income families often receive scholarships, fee waivers, interest subsidies, or financial aid. The exact amount varies by institute, but financial constraints alone do not prevent deserving students from studying there.
3. Survival during MBA is possible.
Thousands of students from modest backgrounds manage hostel expenses, mess charges, and personal expenses through careful budgeting, scholarships, family support, stipends, or savings. You will not be the first person in this situation.
4. Right now, your biggest mistake would be worrying about MBA financing before securing admission.
First get the CAT percentile and admission offer. Once you have that, there are many financing options available. Without the admission offer, you're stressing about a problem that may look very different a year from now.
5. Your family income can actually make you eligible for certain need-based aid programs that higher-income students don't qualify for.
So my suggestion is:
Focus 100% on CAT preparation for now. Let future-you deal with loans and scholarships after converting a good B-school. One step at a time.
Many students from families earning less than ₹2.5 lakh per year have graduated from top B-schools and transformed their family's financial situation. Don't drop down yourself before the exam even happens.
