Is Work Experience Required for an MBA in India?

Published 5 September 2026 · 7 min read · Master in Business Administration (MBA)

No. Every IIM and almost every Indian B-school admits freshers to the two-year MBA. The eligibility rule is a bachelor’s degree with 50 percent, or 45 percent for SC, ST and PwBD candidates. Work experience is scored, not required. Every IIM that scores it stops counting at 36 months. The exceptions are the one-year and executive programmes, which do need three to five years.

Do You Need Work-Ex to Do MBA in India?

No. Every IIM and almost every Indian B-school admits freshers to the two-year MBA. The eligibility rule is a bachelor’s degree with 50 percent, or 45 percent for SC, ST and PwBD candidates. Work experience is scored, not required. Every IIM that scores it stops counting at 36 months or gives same marks for work-ex over it. How much does work experience count in IIM selection?

Less than most aspirants assume. It is also capped everywhere.

IIM

Where it counts

How it is scored

IIM Bangalore

10 percent of the shortlisting score and 10 percent of the final score

Points equal 10 times months divided by 36. Full marks at 36 months. After the interview this is multiplied by a quality rating on a five-point scale

IIM Ahmedabad

Part of the Application Rating, which is 35 percent of the shortlist and 15 percent of the final score

Zero below 12 months. From 12 to 36 months the score is 0.20 times months minus 11. Capped at 5 beyond 36 months

IIM Calcutta

8 percent of the final composite score

The shortlist itself runs on CAT, class 10 and class 12 marks and gender diversity. Work experience does not enter it

Source: published selection criteria for the 2026-28 batches at IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore and IIM Calcutta.

Three things fall out of that table and none of them get said often enough.

  • The cap is 36 months, everywhere. A candidate with five years of work scores exactly what a candidate with three years scores. Waiting longer adds nothing to the number.
  • At IIM Ahmedabad, anything under 12 months is worth zero. Six months in a job counts the same as no job at all.
  • At IIM Calcutta, work experience plays no part in getting the interview call. That call comes from your CAT score and your school marks.

What the batches really look like

The composition tells you more than the criteria do.

The IIM Ahmedabad PGP 2026-28 batch has 414 students, around 77 percent of whom came in with work experience, averaging about 24 months. So roughly a quarter of the batch walked in as freshers.

Recent batch data puts freshers at about 41 percent at IIM Calcutta, 29 percent at IIM Ahmedabad and 14 percent at IIM Bangalore. Those numbers move a little every year, but the pattern holds. A fresher at IIM Calcutta is unremarkable. A fresher at IIM Bangalore is in a clear minority.

The other side of it: the average work experience in these batches is around two years, not five. The batch is not full of senior professionals. It is full of people who worked for a couple of years and then applied.

Where work experience really helps

Not in the points. In the interview.

At IIM Ahmedabad the personal interview is 50 percent of the final composite score. At IIM Calcutta it is 48 percent. That is where admission is really decided. A candidate with two years of work has concrete material: a project that went wrong, a client who changed the brief, a manager they disagreed with.

A fresher has to build the same substance out of internships, live projects, a thesis or a position of responsibility. It is harder, but it is the same job. Panels are not testing whether you had a salary. They are testing whether you can talk about something real with judgement attached.

One detail worth knowing. IIM Bangalore explicitly excludes internships, apprenticeships, articleship and unpaid work from its work experience count. A CA articleship gives you plenty to talk about in the interview and exactly zero work experience points on the form.

Should you work for two years before applying?

Work first if you were going to work anyway. Do not work purely to buy points.

Run the arithmetic. Work experience is worth 8 to 10 percent at the IIMs and stops paying at three years. Two extra years spent chasing that is two years of post-MBA salary you never earn, at the start of your career when compounding matters most. The points do not cover it.

There is a better reason to work, though. It has nothing to do with the form. Two years in a job tells you what you want the MBA to change. People who come in knowing that pick their electives and their summers with intent. People who come straight through often spend the first year working out what they are there for.

So the honest answer is: if you have a job you are learning from, finish a year or two of it and apply. If you are sitting in your final year wondering whether to manufacture experience first, do not. Apply this cycle.

If you are a fresher applying this year

Put your effort where the weight really sits.

  • CAT is 56 percent of the shortlist at IIM Calcutta and 65 percent at IIM Ahmedabad. It is the single biggest lever you control. No profile point compensates for a weak percentile.
  • Class 10 and class 12 marks are already fixed. At several IIMs they matter more than work experience. Nothing to do about them now except know where you stand.
  • Academic diversity works in your favour if you are not an engineer. It is scored at most IIMs, where non-engineers are scarce in the applicant pool.
  • Build interview material now, from your internship, your final year project or a role you held. Two solid stories with numbers in them beat a year of vague office time.

The percentile is the part still in your hands between now and 29 November. Daily timed practice is at /practice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a fresher get into an IIM?

Yes. Freshers were about 41 percent of a recent IIM Calcutta batch, 29 percent at IIM Ahmedabad and 14 percent at IIM Bangalore. No IIM requires work experience for its two-year MBA. The only eligibility rule is a bachelor’s degree with 50 percent, or 45 percent for SC, ST and PwBD candidates.

How much work experience is ideal for an MBA in India?

Does an internship count as work experience for MBA admissions?

Usually not. IIM Bangalore specifically excludes internships, apprenticeships, articleship and unpaid work from its work experience calculation. Only full-time paid employment after graduation counts. An internship is still useful material for the interview.
